The train in Morocco is the means of transportation more efficient and more comfortable to visit the country. The Moroccan rail system is cheap and most tourist destinations are served. Trains connect the cities of Marrakech, Fez, Casablanca (and its airport), Rabat, Oujda, Tangier and Meknes. If you want to join the desert, the Atlas Mountains, or Agaidr Essaouira on the coast, you should take the bus, rent a car or take a taxi to your destination.
You can not book a train ticket out of Morocco. Once there, join the train station nearest to process your booking. The trains are very regular and frequent basis, so there is no problem to book just one day in advance, for example.
If you travel from Tangier to Marrakech and want to take an overnight train (departing Tangier at 21.05), make sure that the bunks are not already fully booked. If they are, do not panic, there are still places available in second class, so you will not have to stay overnight in Tangier if you do not want to.
Some hotel staff can be quite friendly and you book berths in advance, and ONCF (transportation company) will give you your ticket upon arrival at the train station. This is a rather embarrassing for the hotel staff, and financial risk if you do not, but if you are really stressed, you can send an e-mail in advance at your hotel and ask what that it can do for you.
