With a population of about 94,787 in 2010, Avignon stands on the left bank of the Rhone river in southern France. Avignon is known as the "City of the Popes," and famous for its Palais des Papes (Papal Palace), a surprising and massive medieval structure where the Popes lived since the early 14th to early 15th century. Several travel agencies and air transport / rail conducts promotional offers on Eurostar trips to this city.
It is mainly the palaces and several medieval structures that are the main points of interest in Avignon. And one, the walls built by the Popes are still largely preserved, and are one of the most valuable examples of medieval fortification preserved. The ruins of a 12th century medieval bridge, the Pont d'Avignon, stands still today as split. Next to the Palais des Papes is the 12th-century Cathedral of Notre-Dame-des-dom's, built on a Romanesque architecture and has a golden statue of the Virgin placed on the west tower.
In the cathedral is the tomb of Pope John XXII, remarkable masterpiece of Gothic sculpture.
Also be sure to visit the Petit Palais (check in offering Eurostar promotion if you arrive with this company) where the Pope and his entourage lived until the castle was habitable. They act now as a museum with an outstanding collection of Renaissance paintings of the School of Avignon, as well as many Italian paintings depicting the Virgin and Child by Botticelli. There are also several other beautiful and interesting museums as well as to visit you in Avignon.
Avignon is home to the famous theater festival held every summer in Avignon - the theater has traditional theatrical events as well as dance, film, and music. The festivities are strategically placed in all the historical sites of the city, especially around and inside the Palais des Papes.
